Calorie Counting

Author: Matt Smart

In this short article I will be exploring the benefits in terms of ‘counting calories’. Calorie counting is to calculate how many calories you consume when eating a food and how many you burn when engaging in physical exercise. In doing so, it enables you to understand exactly what you are fuelling your body with in relation to the three main macronutrients (Protein, Fats and Carbohydrates). Not forgetting the importance of your micronutrients (Vitamins and Minerals), gained through consuming fruits and vegetables.

The importance of counting calories when attempting to lose body fat is so you can calculate the energy intake (food consumed) versus the energy output (physical exercise). In short, you need to consume less energy than your body exerts. Calorie counting is considered the most effective weight loss method. To work out how many calories you should consume per day, based on your activity levels and your personal statistics, I recommend a calorie calculator such as this one shown on - http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

Calorie counting is popular within the health and fitness community and is something you can easily incorporate into your lifestyle and daily routine. I would recommend downloading MyFitnessPal on your computer, phone or tablet – so you can take it everywhere you go. Simply enter the name of the food or scan the barcode to find the item in a large database of over 5 million foods, or you can select foods from a list of most frequently eaten foods. This simple, yet extremely effective App, will allow you to input everything that you consume that day. From there, you can continue to use this App to assess your calorie target against your current goals.
